The Lord Has Made Room For Us

Genesis 26
19 Now Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and found there a well of living [spring] water.
20 And the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac’s herdsmen, saying, The water is ours. And he named the well Esek [contention] because they quarreled with him.
21 Then [his servants] dug another well, and they quarreled over that also; so he named it Sitnah [enmity].
22 And he moved away from there and dug another well, and for that one they did not quarrel. He named it Rehoboth [room], saying, For now the Lord has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.

• Room (Rest, peace, provision, space) won by fleshly contention will not last. It will soon be contended against again. There will be no peace or safety. It will be a fleshy existence.
• Room provided to us by The Lord is unchallenged. It is a space with time to grow, mature and bear fruit. It is joy and peace, praise and worship and a testimony unto The Lord’s glory!
• There was no contention for Rehoboth. There was no strife or frustration. The place had been prepared ahead of time by The Lord and Isaac’s rest and trust in His Lord allowed Him to discover Rehoboth. How many times have we fought when we should have moved on? Are we living in frustration or are we living in joyful rest knowing that The Lord has made room for us? “that where I am you may be also” John 14:3
• May our faith be at rest in The Lord and ever trusting/looking for His Rehoboths. May we learn not to fight, strive, contend for our own understanding. He, The God of all the earth, has gone before us. He is the Author of our faith and He has written beautiful and wonderful plans for us which He will lead us into as we trust and rest in Him. He has already won every victory and He has already provided every need. Hallelujah! May we be found abiding in Him.

2 Peter 1
3 …His divine power has given to us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him that has called us to glory and virtue:

You Sit Still. He Will Not Rest

Ruth 3
18 Then said she, Sit still, my daughter, until you learn how the matter turns out; for the man will not rest until he finishes the matter today.

“Sit still, my daughter, until you learn how the matter turns out”

  • Boaz also told her not to fear/fret (v11-13). Like Ruth we are told to have faith and trust in our Redeemers work. We also are often reminded to sit still and watch to see how The Lord will bring things about.
  • The waiting time can often seem so hard for the flesh. We can be so impatient! We have such a selfish, sensual need for control and gratification that we lose sight of the incredible, miraculous and free provision that is being given to us. We lose sight of the “rewarder of the reward” (Hebrews 11:26)
  • Psalm 46:10 Let be and be still, and know (recognise and understand) that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations! I will be exalted in the earth!
  • Isaiah 40:31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
  • When we have cried out to The Lord and brought our petition before Him then we ought to have the faith to believe that He “will do for you all you require”. This is faith!! This is dependence. This is to rest in Him and to cast yourself upon His goodness and His provision. Ruth could go about her day with joy and contentment knowing that all was being done on her behalf. She could rest and sit still, without fear or worry because her redeemer was doing all that was required.

“for the man will not rest until he finishes the matter today.”

  • We underestimate how carefully and diligently the man (Jesus) will work to accomplish not our desire but His! This is such a precious truth that we often take for granted or under appreciate! Boaz was not working in a sensual sense merely to satisfy Ruth. Boaz was eager to fulfil his own, selfless desire to provide and to care of both Ruth, Naomi and the household of Elimelech!
  • Psalm 121:4 Behold, He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
  • Hebrews 7:25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever lives to make intercession for them.
  • Our Lord, Saviour, Redeemer, Father and Shepherd will not rest until He has accomplished all that will glorify Him in our lives! He will not rest until we are at rest!
  • Let us not lose sight of our Saviour’s desire for us. How He longs for us, how His whole heart is longing to intimately commune with us. May we rest in great peace and joy knowing all that our Lord is doing on our behalf and all that He desires for us. He has plans to prosper us and do us good and He will be faithful to complete all those plans and to bring us to a beautiful and expected end!
